Growing up, I hated school. I wasn't a bad kid, I just literally had zero interest. It was probably because I have a severe learning disability, dyslexia. Still today I only read on a fourth or fifth grade level. I would sit in science class with my knee bouncing up and down staring at the classroom door.
Above the door was a clock that always seemed frozen... the 45-minute science class felt like four hours long. Today, I wake up at 4 AM, I go to bed at 10 PM, and the day is gone in a snap. It's so funny when you find your passion, your oxygen, your addiction - time doesn't even exist.
My father was a union construction worker and told me, "School's not for everybody; if you learn a trade you'll always be able to feed your family." My mother was an educator, and said "School school school." In my senior year in high school, I got offered a full scholarship to play football in college and was at a crossroads. Mom was on one shoulder and Dad was on the other shoulder. I didn't know what to do. I thought about it and prayed on it for a few days. I woke up one morning and realized every night I went to bed dreaming about football and every morning I woke up and it was the first thing I thought about. I knew this was what I needed to do.
I received the full scholarship to play football at Stony Brook University where I graduated to two-time all American. By senior year I had my second knee surgery and realized I wasn't going to the NFL. We were in the top of the real estate market in 2005, economy was racing couldn't get a job anywhere my dad already turned my bedroom into a billiards parlor so going back home wasn't an option. A buddy of mine on the football team gave me this book that changed my life forever - Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. The book talks about real estate entrepreneurship and passive income. I realized that book was written for me. I ran out and bought a two family house. At that time my beautiful wife and I lived upstairs and we rented out the downstairs. After doing the expenses I realized we were living there making about $100 a month. I had the "Aha" moment. The lightbulb went off. I was going to start buying rental properties.
